The Kidde P4010ACSCOAQ-WF is Kidde's 3-in-1 smart alarm: it detects smoke, it detects carbon monoxide, and it monitors the quality of the air in the room the rest of the time. That third job is the unusual one. A normal alarm sits silent for years and only speaks up during an emergency; this one is also tracking the things that quietly affect how a home feels day to day.

Fire detection is photoelectric, which reacts to the thick, slow smoke of a smouldering fire — upholstery, bedding, an overloaded outlet behind furniture. Carbon monoxide detection uses a separate electrochemical sensor, because CO is invisible, odourless and nothing a smoke sensor can see. Between them the unit covers the two threats most likely to catch a household asleep.

The air quality side measures Total Volatile Organic Compounds, along with temperature and humidity.
